FSSAI Instructs Online Platforms to Deliver Food Items with a Minimum 45-day Shelf life

On Tuesday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) instructed e-commerce and quick-commerce food operators to guarantee that products have a minimum shelf life of 30 percent or at least 45 days remaining before their expiration at the time of delivery.

This directive comes in response to increasing worries about breaches of food safety standards in the quick-commerce and e-commerce sectors.

The CEO of FSSAI urged e-commerce FBOs to implement measures that guarantee a minimum shelf life of 30 percent or 45 days before the expiration date at the time of delivery to consumers, according to the statement.

Rao, who led the meeting, emphasized that all product claims made on e-commerce platforms must be consistent with the information presented on product labels and comply with FSSAI’s Labelling and Display Regulations. He also warned food business operators (FBOs) to avoid making unsubstantiated claims online.

This would help avoid misinformation and safeguard consumers’ right to precise product information, stated the regulator.

He highlighted the essential role of online platforms in safeguarding consumer health and enhancing transparency. He stressed that no Food Business Operator (FBO) is permitted to operate on any e-commerce platform without a valid FSSAI license or registration, underscoring the importance of adhering to regulatory requirements.

To promote safe food handling at all stages, he directed food business operators (FBOs) to establish effective training programs for delivery staff, equipping them with crucial food safety and hygiene practices. Furthermore, Rao highlighted the necessity of delivering food and non-food items separately to consumers to prevent any risk of contamination.

FSSAI, Online Food Delivery

The session saw participation from more than 200 individuals, both in-person and online, from various parts of the country, highlighting a strong dedication to enhancing food safety standards in the e-commerce industry.

During its 45th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting on November 7, officials urged States and Union Territories to enhance surveillance at popular tourist destinations to ensure elevated safety standards in anticipation of the peak tourist season from November to March.

Rao requested that the Food Commissioners from different states enhance the monitoring of warehouses and other facilities used by e-commerce platforms. He also called for the establishment of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for these warehouses and the delivery personnel associated with these platforms.
