31 Kerala-Made Snacks Declared Unsafe in Karnataka Due to Artificial Coloring Detection

The Karnataka Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has identified 31 unhealthy snacks produced in Kerala and distributed in border areas, including the Kodagu district.

The department analyzed 90 samples of popular snacks from Kerala, including chips, halwa, murukku, spicy mixtures, and dried fruits. According to Mathrubhumi English, some of these products contained artificial colorings like sunset yellow, tartrazine, azorubine, and Allura red.

In addition to identifying problematic hotels and stores, the FSSAI department has raised alarms about the potential distribution of hazardous snacks to other areas and has urged for increased testing.

Karnataka has requested the Kerala government to investigate the matter concerning the snacks supplied to various districts in Karnataka, including Mysuru, Madikeri, Mangaluru, and others.

Some artificial food colorings, including sunset yellow, Allura red, azorubine, and tartrazine, have been linked to potential health risks, especially when consumed in large quantities or over prolonged periods.
