The food safety commissioner swiftly banned the consumption of mayonnaise made from raw eggs for a year, which went into effect on Wednesday, after a lady died and several others experienced health issues after eating momos at a food stall.
The prohibition covers mayonnaise made by FBOs for commercial use that contains raw eggs that have not been pasteurized.
Ban on Egg Mayonnaise
Egg-based mayonnaise has apparently been implicated in at least ten contamination instances in the state this year, according to food safety officials.
Officials suggested a ban based on the Kerala model, and the minister approved it, extending it until October 2025.
However, mayonnaise produced from pasteurized eggs and by establishments with a current FSSAI certification is free from the prohibition.
According to the notification, mayonnaise made from raw eggs appears to be the cause of food poisoning cases in recent months.
Recent Food Poisoning cases due to Mayonnaise
Four Secunderabad residents were admitted to the hospital in the most recent instance after eating shawarma that contained the dip and developing severe diarrhea and vomiting.
For the same reason, 17 residents of Alwal experienced fever, diarrhea, and vomiting in January.
Officials informed the minister in the meeting that 235 establishments have been inspected so far and notices were issued to 170 outlets.
Minister directed them to take strict action against unsafe food practices and low-quality mayonnaise.
Strengthen Food Safety
The food safety department will be expanded in the upcoming months with plans to add three new labs, five mobile testing units, and more personnel to conduct inspections as part of an additional simplification effort.
In order for food laboratories to examine at least 24,000 samples annually, the minister urged for their strengthening.
The establishment of a grievance cell to handle complaints, the appointment of food safety officials in integrated collectorates, and the creation of a drug authority were all recommended as workable measures at the meeting.
