Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) health department teams carried out a checking drive on Saturday, collecting samples of goods used for fasting during the month of Shravan to check for adulteration and quality.
During the day 15 outlets were checked from where 28 samples of flour were collected.
Samples were also collected from some manufacturers, who supply packed flour to retailers.
Samples were collected from Dhanhar Products LLP, Amrat Narsihdas, New Adarsh Masala and Flour Mill, and Vanmalidas Bhagwanji.
The samples will be examined at the SMC Public Health Laboratory, and subsequent actions will be determined by the results of the examination.
There had been no particular complaints made against any flour-making facility or vendor, according to a source in the SMC health department.
However, the samples were gathered as a part of a random inspection to ensure food safety.
“The samples will be tested according to the food standards. There are specific standards for each product, and it will be examined if the flour matches the required standard,” said a health official.
The basic tests will include whether the food item is safe for human consumption.
Apart from household use, the flours are widely used at restaurants and snack shops that sell Shravan special dishes.
In the past, health experts have discovered problems with the labeling on the flour used for fasting.
The business will be penalized and the stock destroyed if the flour maker and seller are discovered to be selling contaminated goods.
