FMCG major Dabur India reduces Added Sugar in Juices By 21%, targeting a further reduction of 3%

Dabur India, a prominent player in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, announced in its annual report that it will reduce added sugars by an average of 3 per cent across two-thirds of its beverage range.

In order to reframe its Real juice portfolio, the firm started a phased strategy in 2019 and was successful in lowering the added sugar content of their top eight juice varieties by 20.95% over the course of three phases.

This results in an annual decrease in sugar consumption of almost 1,300 metric tons.

In the first phase, Dabur lowered sugar content by an average of 5.4%, followed by an additional reduction of 7.5% during the second phase followed by 6.7% in the third phase.

“In our Foods & Beverages division, we are committed to reducing sugar content in our products without compromising on taste or quality. This demonstrates our commitment to promoting healthier options for our consumers,” the report said.

The chairman of Dabur India, Mohit Burman, stated in the report that “Our foundation for future growth is set, and we are now ready to pursue our growth strategies. We are optimistic of a gradual uptick in consumption trends over the course of the next year, considering predictions of a normal monsoon, improving macroeconomic indicators, continued government spending on infrastructure building, and lower inflation.”

The company also said that it launched as many as 14 new products, in line with its strategy of expanding its premium portfolio and total addressable market.

“Our digital-first brands have grossed a collective turnover of over Rs 100 crore,” Burman added.

Dabur has also launched a variety of juices including Real Activ juice with ‘no added sugar’, namely Real Activ Cranberry, Real Activ Pomegranate.

It has modified serving sizes to 180ml from 200ml and 140ml from 160ml and launched ‘Real’ mini assortment in 110 ml aseptic packaging.

This is not just a Dabur drive. With consumers becoming more health conscious, a number of packaged consumer goods manufacturers, such as Nestle India Ltd. and PepsiCo India bottler Varun Beverages Ltd., have been trying to reduce the amount of sugar, salt, and fat in their products.
