A tragic incident occurred in Musimaha village of Kandhamal district when a four year old boy passed away after accidentally swallowing a small plastic toy that was packed inside a chips packet. The child, identified as Bigil Pradhan, was eating the snack at home when the toy got stuck in his throat, causing him to choke.
Medical Officer Confirms Cause of Death
Dr. Jakesh Samantara, the in-charge medical officer at the Community Health Centre (CHC), confirmed that the toy had blocked an important airway, which stopped the child from breathing. He explained that the child may have believed the toy was something he could eat. “The child likely thought the toy was edible and tried to swallow it. Unfortunately, it blocked a vital airway, leading to suffocation,” he stated.
Warning Against Toy Inside Food Packets
Dr. Samantara also raised concerns about food companies placing toys inside snacks meant for children. He stressed that such items are risky and can be dangerous. “Children mistake these toys for edible items. Food companies must stop placing such objects inside packets,” he added.
