New IIP Bengaluru Centre to Transform Packaging Research and Skill Development: Piyush Goyal

The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has inaugurated its new centre in Bengaluru on October 31, 2025. During the launch, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said the facility would play a vital role in packaging education, research, testing, and certification strengthening India’s position as a global leader in modern packaging technology.

The Bengaluru centre is designed to integrate artificial intelligence, data analytics, and smart packaging demonstrations. It aims to promote innovation and skill development while creating opportunities for collaboration between academia and industry. The institute will serve as a space where researchers, students, and professionals can work together to develop next-generation packaging solutions.

World Class Infrastructure for Industry Needs

Built on a four acre campus, the facility features advanced laboratories for material testing, chemical analysis, and transport evaluation. These resources will cater to diverse sectors such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, logistics, e-commerce, and consumer goods. IIP officials said the centre will function as a one stop destination for testing, training, research, and technology transfer, supporting India’s rapidly growing packaging ecosystem.

Food Packaging Takes Centre Stage

A key highlight of the new facility is its dedicated Food Packaging Line, which offers hands-on training and live demonstrations. This line features advanced equipment such as form-fill-seal systems, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), vacuum and shrink packaging units, and barcode printing machines. Through these setups, students and professionals will gain practical experience in modern packaging operations and quality control techniques bridging the gap between classroom learning and industry application.

Headquartered in Mumbai, the Indian Institute of Packaging already operates regional centres in Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, and Lucknow. Over the years, IIP has been instrumental in advancing packaging standards, promoting sustainable practices, and supporting India’s emergence as a global hub for packaging excellence and innovation.

Packaging: A Growing Source of Employment

The packaging industry in India directly and indirectly employs over five million people in areas such as design, manufacturing, testing, logistics, and retail. Experts note that the key growth drivers of the industry include the FMCG, food processing, and pharmaceutical sectors, which together account for over 70 percent of packaging demand.

With the rise of e-commerce and logistics, the demand for lightweight, sustainable, and efficient packaging has increased sharply. Growing consumer awareness about hygiene, safety, and convenience is also shaping the future of the industry. Experts believe that the IIP Bengaluru centre will act as a catalyst in this transformation, enabling India to lead in both smart and sustainable packaging solutions.

The new IIP centre in Bengaluru marks a major milestone in India’s packaging journey. By combining innovation, education, and research, the institute aims to nurture skilled professionals and drive technological advancements that will shape the future of the country’s packaging industry.
