The Delhi Police have uncovered a fake ENO manufacturing unit in the Ibrahimpur area of north Delhi. During the raid, officers seized over 91,000 counterfeit ENO packets, along with packaging material, raw ingredients, and machines used to make and pack the product. Two men Sandeep Jain (45) and Jitender alias Chotu (23) have been arrested. Both lived in the same locality where the fake production unit was being run.
A Well Planned Counterfeit Operation
The police said the unit was running out of a rented house that had been turned into a mini factory. Inside, everything looked professional there were machines for mixing and packaging, as well as printed sachets, stickers, and rolls that copied ENO’s original branding almost perfectly.
When police raided the site, they found more than 91,000 fake ENO sachets, around 80 kg of raw material, 13 kg of printed packaging rolls, over 54,000 fake stickers, 2,100 empty packets ready to be filled and a packaging machine that made the job easier. An officer involved in the investigation said the fake sachets were so close to the real ones that even trained eyes could have trouble spotting the difference.
Why Fake Antacids Are a Serious Risk
Police and health experts warn that these counterfeit products can be very dangerous. Unlike genuine ENO, which is made under strict quality and safety standards, fake powders can contain unknown or unsafe ingredients. Since antacids are widely used to treat acidity and indigestion, fake ones can cause serious stomach problems or other health issues if consumed regularly.
Counterfeiters have moved beyond luxury products like watches and perfumes. Now they are targeting everyday healthcare items that people trust which makes this even more alarming, stated by one officer.
How You Can Tell If Your ENO Is Real
If you use ENO or similar antacid powders, it’s important to check the following before consuming:
- Look at the Packaging:
- Real ENO sachets have clear, sharp printing and smooth sealing.
- Fake ones often have blurred text, spelling mistakes, or uneven cuts.
- Check the Company Name and Logo:
- Genuine ENO is made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) or its partner companies.
- Counterfeit packets may have a different logo or a slightly off color tone.
- Verify the MRP and Batch Code:
- Authentic products always display MRP, manufacturing date, expiry date, and batch number.
- Fake ones might miss these details or print them incorrectly.
- Notice the Powder:
- Real ENO dissolves instantly with fizz and clarity.
- Fake powders may dissolve slowly, appear clumpy, or taste strange.
What Happens Next
Both accused have been remanded to two days of police custody, and officers are now trying to trace where the fake ENO was being supplied. Investigations are also underway to find out if the operation was linked to other counterfeit manufacturing units. Police have urged people to be cautious and buy medicines and health products only from trusted pharmacies. If you come across suspicious packaging or unusually cheap offers, report it to the authorities immediately.
