Fortune Oil Maker Plans to Enter Ready to Eat Food Market

AWL Agri Business is the company behind the popular Fortune edible oils, is planning to expand into ready to eat foods like roti and paratha. According to MD and CEO Angshu Mallick, recent changes in GST rules have made this move attractive. Ready to eat products like roti and paratha are now exempt from GST, while packaged atta still has 5% GST. This gives companies like AWL Agri a chance to enter the market with competitive pricing.

Focus on Sustainable Mustard Farming

The company has also partnered with the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) and Solidaridad Regional Expertise Centre (SREC) to promote sustainable mustard farming. Under this project, AWL Agri will help set up 3,000 model mustard farms across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana by 2027. The company will invest ₹4 crore over the next two years to support this mission.

Mallick believes that lower GST rates on branded food products will encourage more small businesses to join the organised sector. This will lead to better competition, lower prices, and overall growth in the food industry. He also said that formalisation of the food sector will improve as more companies benefit from tax rationalisation.

Strong Growth Expected in the Second Half of the Year

AWL Agri expects better sales in the second half of the financial year due to festive and wedding season demand. While edible oil sales may grow moderately, the food and FMCG division is predicted to grow in double digits. Lower inflation, good monsoon conditions, and improving consumer sentiment especially in rural areas are expected to drive demand.

The company’s food and FMCG business crossed ₹6,000 crore in FY25. Now, AWL Agri aims to reach ₹9,000–10,000 crore by March 2027 with consistent double digit annual growth. To achieve this, they will continue expanding their product range and may acquire more brands, similar to their recent purchase of GD Foods (maker of Tops products).
