ISO Releases Updated ISO 22002 Series for Food Safety Prerequisite Programs

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has officially released revised versions of its ISO 22002 series in 2025. These standards define Prerequisite Programs (PRPs) that support the implementation of food safety management systems across the food supply chain. The updates bring enhanced clarity, structure, and alignment with current global food safety practices.

Which Standards Were Updated or Added?

Here’s a quick look at the new and updated standards:

Updated Standards

  • ISO 22002-1:2025 – Food Manufacturing
  • ISO 22002-2:2025 – Catering
  • ISO 22002-4:2025 – Food Packaging Manufacturing
  • ISO 22002-5:2025 – Transport and Storage
  • ISO 22002-6:2025 – Animal Feed Production

New Standards

  • ISO 22002-7:2025 – Retail and Wholesale (replaces PAS 221)
  • ISO 22002-100:2025 – Common Requirements for All Sectors

No Change

  • ISO/TS 22002-3:2011 – Farming (Still valid, no update)

Implications for FSSC 22000 and ISO-Certified Organizations

Organizations certified to FSSC 22000 or other ISO-based food safety management systems should prepare for a transition to the updated PRP standards. These changes are not automatic; companies must implement a formal change management process.

In this context, Clause 6.3 of ISO 22000:2018 (Planning of Changes) becomes especially relevant, requiring organizations to evaluate, plan, and document changes that impact the food safety management system.

Recommended Change Management Process

To ensure a smooth transition and maintain compliance, organizations are advised to document the following for each change:

  • Title of Change
  • Reason for Change
  • Potential Risks Identified
  • Actions to Address Risks (e.g., gap analysis, updated SOPs, staff training)
  • Responsible Person(s)
  • Implementation Timeline
  • Monitoring and Evaluation of Effectiveness

Proper planning and systematic execution will not only ensure compliance but also reinforce food safety culture within the organization. These updates bring more clarity, better structure, and global consistency. They are not just formal changes they help you build a stronger and safer food business.
