FSSAI Explains Rules for Ayurveda Aahara Products Under 2022 Regulations

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in coordination with the Ministry of Ayush, has issued a new order to guide businesses that make Ayurveda Aahara  food products based on the ancient Indian system of medicine, Ayurveda. These guidelines are part of the Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahara) Regulations, 2022, which were introduced to ensure that Ayurveda-based food items are safe, standardized, and made according to both modern food safety rules and traditional Ayurvedic knowledge.

What Is Ayurveda Aahara?

Ayurveda Aahara refers to foods that are prepared using Ayurvedic principles, meant to support good health and balance in the body. These foods are often based on traditional herbs, spices, and ingredients that have been used in India for centuries. To make sure these foods are both safe to consume and authentic, FSSAI has created clear rules under the 2022 regulations.

List of Approved Ayurveda Aahara Products Under Category A

As per the latest notice, FSSAI has officially shared a list of Category A Ayurveda Aahara products. These are the items that food companies are allowed to make and sell. The list has been created in consultation with the Ministry of Ayush, which looks after the promotion of traditional systems like Ayurveda. This list is meant to help Food Business Operators (FBOs) clearly know which products are permitted under the Ayurveda Aahara regulations.

What If a Product Is Missing From the List?

FSSAI also clarified that if a food business wants to manufacture an Ayurveda Aahara product that is not included in the current list, they can still request FSSAI to add it. To do this, they must provide scientific or textual evidence from recognized Ayurveda books that are listed in Schedule A of the regulations. In other words, if a food is mentioned in approved Ayurveda texts, and follows Ayurvedic guidelines, businesses can apply to get it officially added.

Requests can be sent to FSSAI at: ayurveda-aahara@fssai.gov.in

Changes Will Be Shared Separately

The notice also mentions that FSSAI may update or add more products to the list from time to time. Whenever there are changes, a separate notification will be issued so that businesses are kept informed. This makes the system flexible and open to including new products based on scientific support or traditional references.

Official Approval and Contact

The notice has been issued with the approval of the Competent Authority, and it has been signed by Dr. Alka Rao, Advisor (Science, Standards & Regulation) at FSSAI. Food businesses are encouraged to read the full list carefully and follow the rules strictly to ensure their products meet both safety and Ayurvedic standards.
