Supreme Court Asks Centre, States to Respond on Consumer ‘Right to Know’ Plea

The Supreme Court on Monday asked the central and state governments to reply to a petition that says customers should have the right to know more than just the product details they should also know who is selling it. The petition was filed by Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, who said that knowing about the seller is important to protect customers from fraud and unfair business practices.

Why Customers Need Seller Details

The petition says customers should not only know the product’s quality, quantity, expiry date, and certification (like FSSAI or BIS), but also the name, address, phone number, and other details of the seller, distributor, or shop owner. This will help people make better and safer choices while buying something.

Details to Be Displayed at Shops

The petition asked the court to direct shopkeepers, traders, and distributors to display their business details at the entrance of their shop. These details like name, registration, contact number, and number of employees should be written clearly on a board so that every customer can see it before buying anything.

The plea says that when sellers share their details, it becomes easier for customers to file complaints if something goes wrong with the product or service. This also stops dishonest sellers from cheating customers and disappearing after the sale.

About the Market

The petition explains that knowing the seller’s information helps create a fair and open market where everyone plays by the rules. When people are well-informed, they can choose better products and services.

The Supreme Court will look into the matter after getting replies from the Centre and all states. The case could lead to new rules that make it compulsory for sellers to be more transparent and accountable to customers.
