The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has told all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to be very careful and honest when submitting their annual returns. Sharing wrong or false information could lead to strict penalties under the law.
Why Correct Information Matters
FSSAI explained that giving correct information is very important to keep our food safe. These annual returns include details like how much food was produced and other important data. This helps the authorities make sure that food businesses are following the rules.
Since December 2020, it has been compulsory to file these annual returns only through the FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System) website. According to FSSAI, this change has made more food businesses submit their returns on time.
Strict Checks and Possible Penalties
FSSAI has asked Licensing Authorities to closely check the annual returns submitted by businesses in their area. If they find any false data or mistakes that look intentional, the businesses can face action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This includes fines under Section 61 of the Act.
Mistakes Can Be Corrected
FSSAI understands that genuine mistakes can happen. So, in January 2024, it introduced an option on the FoSCoS platform for businesses to correct or update their annual returns. In its latest order on July 7, 2025, FSSAI advised businesses to use this option as soon as they spot an error, and to follow the timelines and pay the required fee.
It is further repeated that giving false or misleading information can lead to a penalty under Section 61 of the FSS Act, 2006. So it’s important to correct mistakes on time to avoid punishment, the order said.
Making Food Businesses More Responsible
With these steps, FSSAI wants to make sure food businesses are honest and responsible. The main goal is to protect people’s health by ensuring food products are safe and reliable.
